Ed Cutcliffe, the moustachioed gentleman behind the Little Marionette cafes has added another title to his mantle – publican of The Lodge Wine Bar. He has converted the funny little space beneath the Balmain Lodge into a pocket-sized watering hole whose decor is part bordello and part terrarium. On a summer afternoon, grab a perch on the outdoor mezzanine among the hanging plants, or nestle inside behind the crimson theatre curtains when the weather is chilly. If you are in Sydney and nosing around in the inner-west for a Chesterfield to hide in, you can get a pampering from Manager Tom Hoff which will involve good value wines, including a boutique Australian selection and intimate alfresco dining. It’s small and cosy with intimate lighting.
The wine list is complemented by a grazing menu created by Chef Jon Cowan (previously the Four in Hand Paddington.). His menu is dependent on fresh seasonal produce and will soon introduce ‘Jon’s kilo of the Day’, which will be a special of the best purchased at the market each morning. Venison, prawns and pippies will be on the list.
This recently revamped foodies’ haven will soon be introducing a classic cocktail list using premium spirits – shaken or stirred James Bond style ah la Manager Tom! There will also be craft draft beers on tap which rotate fortnightly using local micro/craft breweries and seasonal beers.
